The Echoes Beneath The Rubble

In this series the artist takes older drawings and transforms them through layers of paint. The resulting compositions feel renewed, yet haunted by what’s underneath.

Produced in the aftermath of the war in Iran, these works carry the distinct weight of rupture, memory, and endurance. But they also capture the psychological toll of violence—the internal fractures, disorientation, and mental exhaustion that persist long after the events themselves have passed.

Rather than completely hiding the original images, the artist lets fragments of the past remain visible just below the painted surface. This means each painting holds different moments in time simultaneously: the earlier sketch, the present act of reworking it, and the lingering echo of lived experience. In this body of work, the buried image acts as a metaphor for memory itself—partially obscured, perhaps, but never silent. It is a deeply affecting meditation on survival, trauma, and the echoes that remain beneath the rubble of both history and the self.
